What are Cookies?
Cookies (or markers) are small text files created by a web server on the user's device when accessing a specific website, with the purpose of storing and transferring information.
These markers are sent by the web server to the user's device (usually to the browser) and stored so that the device can be recognized during subsequent visits. Cookies are sent back from the user’s device to the site during each subsequent visit.
First-party and Third-party Cookies
Cookies can be installed not only by the website operator that the user visits (first-party cookies), but also by a different site that installs them through the first site (third-party cookies) and is able to recognize them. This happens because the visited site may include elements (images, maps, sounds, links to web pages of other domains, etc.) hosted on servers other than the visited site's server.
According to the measure issued by the Italian Privacy Authority on May 8, 2014, titled "Identification of simplified procedures for information and consent acquisition regarding cookie usage" (hereinafter, "Measure"), the information obligations and, where appropriate, consent requirements for third-party cookies lie with the third parties; the site owner, as a technical intermediary between third parties and users, is required to include updated links to third-party policies and consent forms in the extended notice.
Technical, Analytical, and Profiling Cookies
Based on their purpose, cookies are divided into technical cookies and profiling cookies.
Technical cookies are installed solely for the purpose of "transmitting a communication over an electronic communication network, or as strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide that service" (cf. Article 122, paragraph 1, of Legislative Decree 196/2003, hereinafter, "Privacy Code").
They are usually used to enable efficient navigation between pages, store user preferences, store information about specific user configurations, authenticate users, etc.
Technical cookies can be divided into browsing cookies, used to record data necessary for normal navigation and site use on the user's computer (for example, to remember the preferred page size in a list), and functional cookies, which allow the website to remember choices made by the user to optimize its features (for example, functional cookies allow the site to remember a user’s specific settings, such as country selection and, if set, permanent access status).
Some of these cookies (called essential or strictly necessary) enable functions without which some operations would not be possible.
Under the above-mentioned Article 122, paragraph 1, Privacy Code, the use of technical cookies does not require user consent but only requires informing users.
Analytics cookies are also treated as technical cookies and, therefore, as specified in the Italian Privacy Authority’s Measure of May 8, 2014, their installation does not require user consent. They are used if they are created and used directly by the site operator (first-party) for optimizing the site, collecting aggregated information about the number of users and how they visit the site, and if they are created and made available by third parties and used by the site for statistical purposes, provided that measures are taken to reduce their identifying power (for example, by masking significant parts of the IP address). The use of such cookies, in compliance with the Privacy Authority’s guidelines, must be based on contractual agreements between the sites and third parties, in which third parties expressly commit to using them only to provide the service, to store them separately, and not to "enrich" or "cross" them with other data they possess.
Profiling cookies are used to track the user's navigation, analyze their behavior for marketing purposes, and create profiles based on their tastes, habits, choices, etc., in order to deliver targeted advertising messages in line with the user’s interests and preferences expressed during online navigation.
Such cookies can only be installed on the user’s device if they have given consent, as specified in the Measure.
Persistent and Session Cookies
Based on their duration, cookies are divided into persistent cookies, which remain stored on the user’s device until they expire, unless deleted by the user, and session cookies, which are not stored persistently and disappear when the browser is closed.
Which Cookies are Used on This Site?
Technical Cookies
This site uses technical cookies, installed by the site itself to ensure and monitor the functioning of the site, allow efficient navigation, and provide the requested content and services.
These cookies, for example, allow the recognition of the selected language and the country from which the user connects to this site. These cookies, recognizing the user on a new access to the site, prevent the need to re-enter data each time.
These cookies cannot be disabled, and their installation does not require prior consent from the user under Article 122 of the Privacy Code and the Measure.
Below are the names, purposes, and duration of each technical cookie used:
Analytics Cookies
The site uses analytical cookies created and provided by third parties (specifically Google) and used by the site to statistically analyze access or visits to the site, allow the site owner to improve its structure, navigation logic, and content, and collect information about site usage.
For more details, you can visit the following link: Google Analytics.
The site owner uses first-party cookies to collect statistical information about site usage by users in an aggregated form (number of visitors, pages visited, time spent on the site, etc.).
Additionally, the site owner uses cookies from the Google Analytics platform to collect individual information about the use of the site by individual users (number of visits, pages visited, time spent on the site, etc.). In this case, the site owner has not anonymized the IP addresses of third-party analytics cookies, and therefore the possibility of accessing disaggregated data is not blocked by default.
For more information about Google Analytics, see Google Analytics Support.
You can disable Google Analytics cookies by downloading a specific browser plugin available here.
Profiling Cookies
The site owner uses first-party and third-party profiling cookies associated with DoubleClick to send advertising messages aligned with the user’s preferences.
The site uses first-party profiling cookies to track and store user preferences detected during each visit to the website platforms, thus creating profiles that allow more relevant messages to be sent to the user, such as displaying products they are looking for or offering similar items.
This site also allows the use of third-party profiling cookies that display commercial offers even when the user visits other websites (retargeting).
Tracking information collected via these cookies will also be shared with third parties who will use it for their promotional purposes.
These cookies will only be installed on the user’s device after obtaining their consent, given by continuing navigation or interacting with any element of the site, as indicated in the banner with the short notice, as required by the Measure.
Legal Bases for Processing
Technical browsing and functionality cookies: performance of a contract to which you are a party: the user’s request to access and use the site’s content.
Analytics and profiling cookies: legitimate interest / consent.
Providing and Revoking Consent for Profiling Cookies
When accessing any page of the site, a banner containing a brief notice is displayed. Closing the banner or continuing navigation on the site, by accessing another area or selecting an element on the site (such as an image or a link), constitutes consent to the use of cookies. The consent to the use of cookies is recorded with a specific "technical cookie".
Users can select/deselect individual cookies as described above.
Users can also express their preferences on cookies through their browser settings. By default, most web browsers are set to automatically accept cookies, but users can modify the default settings through their browser settings, allowing them to delete/remove all or some cookies or block the sending of cookies, or limit it to specific sites.
Disabling/blocking cookies or deleting them could compromise the optimal use of some areas of the site or prevent certain functionalities, as well as affect the functioning of third-party services.
